NEHAWU Limpopo Provincial Executive Committee Statement

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union [NEHAWU] in Limpopo convened its Provincial Executive Committee [PEC] meeting on the 11th – 12th July 2022 in Polokwane.The Provincial Executive Committee considered the international correlation of class forces; political and socio-economic situations and organizational matters affecting our members and the workers in general.
The meeting took place few days after our national union celebrated 35 Years. The PEC noted the reports that the Hawks raided the Provincial Department of Health with search warrant, a move we welcome albeit their action is too late.
International Front
The PEC paid tribute to Comrade Mbulaeni Amos Mbedzi, our internationalist who perished after the despotic Mswati regime had handed him to South African government to finish his remaining years in jail.
Comrade Amos Mbedzi will be remembered by his words when he says “My view of freedom is not limited to boarder gates, I’m not free yet if my fellow brothers and sisters are still oppressed. The route of liberation chose me. I will fight for my people selflessly”.
The PEC also resolved to advance international solidarity work with the people of Swaziland, Western Sahara, Cuba, Venezuela, Palestine, Basque and Kurdistan.
Political Front
The PEC resolved to convene Political Classes in order to deepen class consciousness among our shopstewards. The PEC further wished the South African Communist Party a successful 15th National Congress and called upon the party to close the gap with worker unions and lastly that the union and the working class must contest for the ANC in the coming national conference.
Socio-Economic Situation
The PEC re-affirmed its previous decision for the permanent absorption of Community Health Workers, Community Development Workers, Expanded Public Works Programme [EPWP] and all those working as contract workers yet those services are continuous in government systems.
The PEC was convened against the backdrop of high food prices and increase in fuel prices, which have a dire bearing on the working-class.
The PEC noted the advertised professional posts in the Department of Health and call that priority be given to those who have qualified and were not translated because of budgetary constraints.
The PEC made a call to the Government and its Municipalities to act with speed in creating infrastructure for the youth of the province for recreational purposes. The PEC further made a call to government and municipalities to protect the local economy.
Organisational Priorities
The PEC rejected the current offer put by the employer at the Public Service Coordinating Bargaining Council. The PEC appreciated the strike action called by our members at SARS and commit itself fully behind the action.
The PEC further resolved to start preparing for regional marches at the department of Justice which will culminate into provincial march in September. The PEC also noted the non-response of the Limpopo Administration on the memorandum of demands submitted during the Provincial Day of Action convened in November 2021 and resolved to first meet with the newly elected ANC POBs before any action is taken.
The PEC further resolved that the TVET sector and Justice Cluster employment should remain under public service act.
